We slowed and that plane became airborn. A few moments later, I could see another plane taking off on a more distant runway at the same rate of ascent as the one on the near runway.

Caller after caller suggested or stated that the fact that there was no shred of evidence to even charge the Duke University lacrosse players with a crime, a crime occurred. Wind the tape back a few years: despite overwhelming evidence against OJ Simpson, he was acquitted in court and found innocent in the court of black public opinion.

The following quote says a lot about the intransigence of murder in Baltimore

A Police Department spokesman blamed the homicide rate on a culture that discourages people from seeking the help of police.

"It's hard to help people who don't want your help," said police spokesman Matt Jablow, adding that more than 80 percent of city homicide victims have criminal records. The average homicide victim has been arrested 8.6 times, he said.

"All too many times there will be a shooting, a nonfatal shooting, and in the course of our investigation we'll talk to the person, and they won't cooperate with us," he said. "And in a few weeks or months they'll show up dead."

These victims and perpetrators live in a world of their own, with its own traditions, rules, and standards. If there is something to be done, that culture needs to be altered. It may not be reachable and we will have to live with this as brutal background noise in an otherwise civilized city.

Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry, who now sits on the city council, accuses police officers in the District of Columbia of engaging in racial profiling.
      Barry was given a traffic ticket Saturday for driving with a suspended license after an officer, who happens to be black, pulled him over for going too slow. It turns out Barry's license was not suspended, the Washington Post reports, although he has a court date pending after being pulled over by the Secret Service in September and cited for drunken driving.
      In fact, Barry told the Post, he believes that law enforcement officers are targeting him specifically, not just blacks. He thinks that they all know his car.

Carmelo Anthony's nature was first revealed when he appeared in a Baltimore 'hood flick' that was designed to discourage ordinary citizens from "snitching" to the police about illegal activity. Don't believe for a secoond that he just happened to be a bystander when the video camera was filming. Everyone passively falls in with the wrong crowd, but no one admits to being the one who calls the wrong crowd to order. Put another way, trouble finds troublemakers.

Another act in his urban drama played out in a fight where his Denver Nuggets brawled with the New York Knicks. Once more, the real Carmelo Anthony stood up for urban culture. Perhaps after 15 games' worth of rest, one can hope that he and other "ballers" will have learned a lesson. It's not likely however as their culture, one that tolerates, even celebrates antisocial acts, is beyond the reach of an occasional sanction. It will only respond to repeated, drastic, and unapologetic punishments that are free of moral equivocation, coupled with a clearly lit but narrow path to improvement and redemption. The redemptive path offers sweeter and more enduring sustenance than the bitter empty calories produced by winning the "beatdown," but only for those who choose to enter it.

Let's hope there is no act three as it could be fatal.

WASHINGTON -- Justice Stephen G. Breyer says the Supreme Court must promote the political rights of minorities and look beyond the Constitution's text when necessary to ensure that "no one gets too powerful."

Breyer, a Clinton appointee who has brokered many of the high court's 5-4 rulings, spoke in a televised interview that aired one day before justices hear a key case on race in schools. He said judges must consider the practical impact of a decision to ensure democratic participation.

"We're the boundary patrol," Breyer said, reiterating themes in his 2005 book that argue in favor of race preferences in university admissions because they would lead to diverse workplaces and leadership.

"It's a Constitution that protects a democratic system, basic liberties, a rule of law, a degree of equality, a division of powers, state, federal, so that no one gets too powerful," said Breyer, who often votes with a four-member liberal bloc of justices.

Today, the court will hear arguments in a pair of cases involving integration plans in K-12 schools. The legal challenge, which is backed by the Bush administration, could be among the most significant school cases since the landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954 banned racial segregation.

In 2003, the court upheld race-conscious admissions in higher education in a 5-4 opinion by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

O'Connor, however, has since retired and been replaced by conservative Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr. Justice Antonin Scalia, meanwhile, has said the use of race in school admissions lacks any support in the Constitution.

In his interview, Breyer argued that in some cases it wouldn't make sense to strictly follow the Constitution because phrases such as "freedom of speech" are vague. Judges must look at the real-world context because society is constantly evolving, he said.

"Those words, 'the freedom of speech,' 'Congress shall pass no law abridging the freedom of speech' - neither they, the Founders, nor those words tell you how to apply it to the Internet," Breyer said.

Poverty does not equal suffering

For some, poverty and suffering are one in the same. This linkage represents a logical error that needs to be examined and then corrected. One can be poor and not suffer, and, one can suffer without being poor.

Too many people want to end poverty thinking that they are going to end suffering. There is no way to end to either in the actual world where human beings live. Both can only be ended in theory, and the left is enamored with such theories, but can't seem to make them work in the real world.

There are poor people in America who have enough to eat (are obese, even), a clean apartment with central air conditioning, a microwave, a cell phone, a TV, and a dvd player. They are poor and may remain poor for the rest of their days. They are "intractably" poor, but they are not suffering all of their days. Surely they have rough patches, but who among us does not?

HAGERSTOWN MAN SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS FOR ILLEGAL POSSESSION OF A GUN

John Hollis, age 25, of Hagerstown, Maryland was sentenced on Friday, August 25, 2006 to 8 years in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm, announced United States Attorney for the District of Maryland Rod J. Rosenstein.

According to the statement of facts presented to the court on June 19, 2006 at his guilty plea, the Hagerstown Police Department dispatched officers on August 31, 2005 to investigate a report of a home invasion on Clarendon Avenue in Hagerstown. En route to that location, a police officer observed a vehicle 5 blocks from the scene of the reported home invasion which was operating as if the driver was unfamiliar with the equipment. The driver also matched a description of the reported intruder. The officer stopped the vehicle, which was driven by Antoine Jeffrey Pope and contained a passenger. When asked to exit the vehicle, the passenger, later identified as John Hollis, fled dropping a handgun. An officer grabbed Popes arms and asked whether there were any weapons in the car. Pope replied that he was sitting on a gun. A search revealed a fully loaded Taurus .38 caliber revolver between Popes legs.

Pope, age 39, of Hagerstown, Maryland was sentenced on April 21, 2006 to 188 months in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release for being a felon in possession of a firearm.

As the world focuses on the conflict between Israel and Iran's proxy, Hezbollah, a quiet revolution to remove oppression and despair that often leads to terrorism is taking place in neighboring Qatar under the leadership of a dynamic and charismatic woman. Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned is the wife of the amir of Qatar, one of America's strongest allies in the troubled Middle East. While President Bush believes that the removal of terrorism requires a major transformation of the Middle East through the promotion of liberty and democracy, the sheikha has focused on a new mission of statecraft: good governance.

For the sheikha, the three major pillars of good governance are education reform, religious tolerance and political pluralism, all of which she firmly believes can take root in the Middle East. Ultimately, good governance means serving the people-in her mind the most valuable asset of a nation.

She approaches her mission to transform the hearts and minds of the Arab Muslim world with a level of professionalism seldom seen in that part of the world. Her success to date can only be explained by her personality: Disciplined, focused, agenda-driven, and working according to a code of meritocracy. Armed with a degree in sociology from the University of Qatar that she received in 1986 and three doctorates from Virginia Commonwealth University, Texas A&M and Carnegie Mellon, she has a clear vision to transform this energy-rich Sunni Arab state into the education hub of the Middle East.

The nerve center of her drive for education reform is the Qatar Foundation, a nonprofit enterprise dedicated to promoting the arts and sciences, and educating younger generations. The Qatar Foundation created Education City, a 24,000-acre multi-institutional campus, which is home to leading American institutions and think tanks. American universities — including Georgetown, Texas A&M, Carnegie Mellon and Cornell — have set up satellite campuses in Education City, thus enabling Qataris and other Arab Muslims to obtain a Western education. The Rand-Qatar Policy Institute is a new center for independent policy analysis staffed with local scholars. The Rand Corp. is also assisting in the development of a plan to revamp primary and secondary education in Qatar.

The sheikha believes that education is an anchor of good governance because it encourages free thinking and tolerance of other cultures and ideas. Inviting American companies and universities to set up campuses in Qatar demonstrates her commitment to transforming Qatar into a regional educational hub and an incubator of new ideas.

In recognition of her dedication to education reform, UNESCO appointed the sheikha as special envoy for Basic and Higher Education in 2003. As special envoy, she is actively promoting various international projects to improve the quality and accessibility of education worldwide. Her accomplishments include the International Fund for Higher Education in Iraq, which is dedicated to the reconstruction of institutions of advanced learning. The sheikha Mozah personally donated $15 million for training faculty members at Iraq's top universities.

The underlying premise of this focus on education as an anchor of good governance is that education and its commitment to free thinking cannot be the sole domain of the Muslim clergy — whether they be in Tehran, Qom, Nafaj, Riyadh or Cairo. Rather, education will give individuals the wherewithal to decide for themselves and not be brainwashed by ignorant clerics in far off madrassas on the border of Pakistan-Afghanistan.

For the sheikha another aspect of good governance is religious pluralism. One of her seminars on Christian-Muslim understanding was attended by the Archbishop of Canterbury. She has promoted the building of non-Muslim public places of worship in Qatar and has given legal status to Catholic, Anglican, Orthodox, Coptic and Asian Christian denominations. Members of the Bahai faith, persecuted in Iran, enjoy freedom of expression in Qatar.

Working from her modestly decorated office in the outskirts of Doha, the capital of Qatar, the sheikha also focuses on the third pillar of good governance. She argues that a "free zone" of political tolerance will allow for the free flow of ideas and opinions between traditionalists and modernists, where change is enacted through the ballot box, not by resorting to terrorism.
As Washington struggles to contain the evil of global terrorism by promoting democracy in the Middle East, Sheikha Mozah bint Nasser al Missned's road map of transforming the hearts and minds through education is an excellent starting point.

I was listening to a report on the BBC today where the government of Venezuela was allowing workers to have some say in the running of the government-owned aluminum industry. I watched CPSAN's Q and A last night which showed an interview of 2 reporters from the LA Times who did an in-depth study of King-Drew Hospital. Revealing. Poor care and victimology.

Our culture has problems in it that need to be reformed. Every time a white person is critical of us, it is not racism. Every time we fail to meet our obligations, it is not caused by a legacy of racism. Yesterday is as far away as anything on the planet. We need to move on. Holding onto grievances from the past will not get us far into the future. We can glance back at times, but that should not be our primary activity. We need to move forward and look forward.

This is another column that highlights what "the man" and "society" is doing to black men. Not a blessed sentence about the poor choices that some black people make that result in poor life outcomes. No comment on the fact that homicide, AIDS, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes all have huge choice components in them. Never mind the individual and his role in his success or failure.

I sent the author the following message. For whatever reason, it keeps bouncing back:

Sir,

Couldn't you have slipped in one sentence about the poor choices many black people with these poor outcomes make? Your article was all about "the system" and said nothing about the individual.

All people make choices. Some good, some bad. Bad choices lead to bad outcomes many times. Murder is a choice. A poor diet and no exercise is a choice. Shooting up drugs is a choice. Unprotected sex leading to a baby or AIDS is a choice. All these choices individuals make. Mother nature or God, however one sees this, holds each individual accountable for his choices.

Black people who chooses to stay in school, get as much education as possible, get married, and stay married overwhelmingly do well in this country. The numbers bear this out. It's a simple formula, but it is a mystery to many because people prefer to talk about "the man" instead of the man in the mirror.

Some of us have made this bed of nails and now must lay in it.

So-called Black Leaders have called for a march on Washington. For what? The stated intent is to have a commemoration for the Million Man March. I just don't see the point. I saw nothing tangible come from the Million Man March. I heard a lot of retread rhetoric but saw nothing of substance.

I guess the anniversary march will be more of the same - more nothing. I bet that the turnout will be pitiful this time. The past march attracted a lot of people. The lackluster results after the march have soured many to a repeat. Fool me once, shame on you. People will stay away in droves to avoid being fooled twice.

It seems this time that Farrakhan, Big Al, and Jesse will all be there together. They will show some unity by all sharing that one microphone. The rhetoric will be plentiful and of a socialist nature. They have already gotten started. According to the above linked article, Farrakhan said "we're reaching for the millions who carry the rich on their backs." Oh really? It seems to me that the rich and the middle class do most of the "carrying" by paying nearly all of the income taxes, creating the jobs in their small businesses, and contributing time and money to charities.

Sharpton expressed a desire "to end disparities between black and white Americans." I guess he does not know that there will always be disparity between people because people have equal rights but lack equal abilities. If he is for an end to disparaties between blacks and whites, is he in favor of preferential hiring of white basketball players into the NBA? I doubt it.

The worst part is that they "are promoting a Day of Absence from work and school on Friday, October 14th." If "the masses" need anything, they need to be showing up to work and school! Man, these folks are backward.

With "leaders" like these, no wonder there is trouble in the black community.

I wonder if Bill Cosby is on the list of invited guests. I doubt it. I do hope he comments on this foolishness.

Happy Anniversary to Bill Bennett and the folks at Morning In America. Their show is one of the few conservative shows that I can take all the time. Too many of the other conservative talk show hosts are demeaning of the other side. Rather than being righteous, they are self-righteous. I can take them in doses, but then I have to turn them off.

I can listen to Bill Bennett without fear that he will make fun of his opponents. He will make a good argument instead.

Morning is America, that is, waking up in this country every day is a wonderful thing. I don't want to be anywhere else. That his show is titled Morning in America means so much to me. The best mornings are Mornings in America.

I look forward to the day when XM radio puts him on for the full 3 hours of his show. I don't need the Wall Street Journal's show that follows his first 2 hours.
